Meet Carmen

Carmen Calatayud, LPC
I’m a psychotherapist who is passionate about helping adults of all ages with healing, growth and healthy change.

I received my formal psychology training at Marymount University, where I earned the Master of Arts degree in Counseling.

My training and work history include mental health counseling with HIV/AIDS clients, grief counseling with clients experiencing depression and anxiety, and addictions counseling with clients experiencing mental health disorders.

I have additional training and experience in body-mind therapies, addiction, grief, trauma and creative arts techniques.

My post-graduate study includes teacher training certification in Jon Kabat-Zinn’s Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program based at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

I'm certified as a Level 1 Sensorimotor Psychotherapy for Trauma clinician. Sensorimotor Psychotherapy is a treatment approach created by Pat Ogden, Ph.D. and endorsed by worldwide trauma expert Bessel van der Kolk, M.D. I've also trained with Daniel Leven, founder of SomaSoul: Somatic Expressive Therapy, a mind-body therapy that integrates mindfulness, body psychotherapy, creative arts and somatics to foster healing and transformation.

Personally, I'm familiar with life path changes, as I worked in several fields before a midlife shift to psychology. My experiences as a public radio news reporter, writer, editor, voice talent, literacy advocate and published poet have informed my life path. I bring the creativity and wisdom I've gained from family, friends, colleagues and teachers to my work.

As the daughter of immigrants, I have an innate cultural sensitivity. This includes a deep respect for all world and spiritual views, and sexual and gender identities.
